Schools Multicultural Development Service

SMDS is a Telford and Wrekin Service that also serves Shropshire Schools. The service is funded through DfEE Standard Fund Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Grant, following a consortium bid involving Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire.

Core activities

  • Targeted teacher and bilingual classroom assistant support to meet the needs of pupils with English as an Additional Language
  • Advice and support to schools on raising the achievement of minority ethnic groups at particular risk of underachievement
  • Training and resources to promote multicultural education and tackle racism in schools

Services Available

A central service to meet the particular needs of pupils from minority ethnic groups in schools with relatively small numbers and schools with devolved resources who wish to buy back the services of SMDS

Advice and support to schools on the use of EMTAG staff in their schools and the assessment , monitoring and recording of progress for pupils with English as an Additional Language, including new arrivals

Support and advice on monitoring achievement by ethnicity and gender and strategies to raise achievement

A resource centre to support schools in developing a multicultural curriculum

Provision of professional development for  staff on the following areas

  • Race equality and tackling racial harassment
  • Responding to the recommendations for Education following the Inquiry into the Death of  Stephen Lawrence
  • English as an additional language, bilingualism and linguistic diversity
  • Developing a multicultural curriculum from the Early Years onwards
  • Raising the attainment of minority ethnic groups at risk of underachievement

A source of information about cultural and linguistic diversity in the local area

Help and advice on making contact with parents from minority ethnic groups and  local communities

 

 

Resources  

The SMDS resource centre is based at Hollinswood Junior School. Resources can be borrowed by schools and maintained nursery classes in Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire.

Early Years Boxes can be borrowed by members of the Telford and Wrekin Early Years and Childcare Partnership.

Other Early Years providers including those from Shropshire may be asked to pay a small handling charge.      

Resources available for loan include:

  • A library for professionals on language learning, cultural backgrounds, equal opportunities and personal,social and health education
  • A collection of fiction that reflects a world view and the multicultural nature of Britain today
  • Non fiction books, packs, posters, artefacts, clothing, videos, CDs, and cassettes to support the primary and secondary curriculum
  • Books, videos and photo packs to help explore issues such as racism with pupils of all ages
  • Toys, games, jigsaws and activities for language learning that reflect a multicultural Britain
  • Dual language books,dictionaries, posters and books in a range of languages
  • Training materials to support inservice work with staff.
