THE SUTHERLAND STUDENT SUPPORT GROUP

Goals of Provision
  • To create a support structure using group work methods
  • Encourage school attendance on a regular basis
  • Build in structure within the group for development of self-help, self-awareness, confidence building, social skills and problem solving skills
  • Examine issues which have a direct affect on students and their attendance, for example, bullying, family problems
  • Create positive roots back into school with reduced truancy or unauthorised absence
  • Development of positive relationships and working partnerships with head teachers, year heads, teachers, pastoral support and young people
Methods

School referral to small group work, usually off site to school.     Group work skills used to develop key skills and self esteem with young people.     Young people encouraged and supported to explore their own attendance problems and develop clear strategies to address these.     Supporting and encouraging young people to take responsibility for solutions.
