Newport Infant School
Playground Initiative for 5-7years
An initiative introduced to encourage co-operation,
sharing and consideration for each other.
Introduced to reduce conflict and aggression.
The initiative encourages children to be
responsible in their play by caring for the equipment and activities
provided.
The Initiative
Nine classes, nine activities
- Toy
cars/lorries etc with road layout floor mats
- Investigation box (magnifying glasses, toy binoculars etc)
- Dressing up box
- Small apparatus
- Large meccano
- Large
building bricks
- Skittles and stilts
- Skipping ropes
Football (air ball in a designated area),
a book box and the option to not participate are also available
as optional extras.
The activities are set out daily, weather
permitting
Each has a designated place in the school
grounds
The activities are numbered and are accessed
by each class on a rotational basis. A chart displays the activities;
the children learn quickly and can easily work out when it will
be their turn to access their favourites.
The class using a particular activity on
the day designated is responsible for tidying it away.
Since the introduction of this initiative,
playground problems have been reduced to a minimum.
The downside –
- Costly to set up (a supportive PTA is wonderful), it can be
built up over time
- Cannot
be fully operated in poorer weather conditions (although it is
possible to set out a selection)
The playground initiative operates at each
break, weather permitting. It has enabled lunchtime staff to be
participants in the play rather than managers of incidents. Everyone
benefits!!
