Donnington Wood CE Junior School
Behaviour Management – A Whole School
Approach
·
Classes devise classroom rules based on respect for
themselves, each other and school.
·
Each class has behaviour targets based around class
rules, taking into account behaviour during break times. Pupils
negotiate these targets with their class teacher based on a notional
target each term – (possible 12 per day up to a maximum of 15. Extras
awarded for exceptional efforts in behaviour)
·
Each week a class is given a special plaque to recognise
their effort and those classes that reach their termly target are
rewarded individually by class teacher with class agreed reward
eg. Picnic, extra swimming, games afternoon, visit to local park.
·
Pupils are put into four ‘tribes’ each with a boy
and a girl captain to act as role models. Pupils elect captains
after candidates have made a presentation.
·
Pupils are awarded points for appropriate behaviours
as well as other achievements. Points are given by adults and Tribal
Captains.
·
Tribal points are collected and the tribe with the
most points is rewarded at the end of each half term.
·
Individuals are rewarded through the use of stickers,
which are collected in achievement books. Again stickers can be
given for any positive behaviours. The Head and Senior Teacher have
special stickers that count for two ordinary ones.
·
Pupils receive a certificate in special weekly assembly
for every 10 stickers. Certificates are sometimes presented when
the Chair of Governors visits school.
·
Certificates play an important role in reinforcing
positive behaviours and are valued by pupils, parents and adults
in school.
·
Each member of the teaching staff has a student of
the month and a student of the year. This recognises consistent
effort made by pupils.
·
Parents are encouraged to nominate their children
for effort made at home.
·
School supports pupils who have significant behaviour
difficulties through close contact with parents and behaviour modification
plans. These pupils will often have a home-school contact book as
we recognise the great importance of parental involvement.
·
Some pupils especially those in year 6 are ‘conferenced’
to encourage them to take a greater responsibility for managing
their behaviour.
·
School has a standing working party for behaviour
management.
·
A new initiative is due to begin in January. This
will involve more pupils in discussing school issues including behaviour
in a School Council Forum.
