Parents who
are experiencing difficulty in positively influencing and controlling
the behaviour of children may need help to further develop their
parenting skills.
It is possible
in extreme cases where parents and or pupils have become disruptive
within and outside of school, to seek a parenting order via the
magistrate's court. The government is currently looking into the
viability of extending the courts powers into making such orders.
Parents whose
children are exhibiting challenging behaviour may themselves be
reluctant, or feel disempowered to speak constructively to school
staff. This in turn can result in confrontational attitudes when
faced with another incident of bad or unacceptable behaviour.
The Education
Welfare Service has devised and piloted a parenting skills course
to address issues of non school attendance and challenging behaviour
presenting within the home and at school. A voluntary six week course
for parents usually taking place within the school helps parents
to address and develop communication skills with their own children,
and also with school staff. The aim of the course is to improve
not only parenting skills but also to break down any barriers that
might exist between parents and school staff.
